A Few Words on Almost A Year of Marriage

The spring is an exciting time for many reasons-the weather, of course, the opening farmers markets, and the desire of us all to do more than remain home bound- but most of all, it is exciting for me because it reminds me of our preparations for our wedding day. A year ago right about now we ironing out the details of what would be the most perfect day. The anticipation was so exciting! And so is remembering it all.

Almost one year of marriage! Can you believe it? Truthfully I was not expecting this year to be different than any other, but it was. Turns out, exchanging vows and rings and declaring our commitment to one another on that deserted beach on an island in the middle of the sea welcomed a sort of new beginning for us both.

This last year has been a challenging but beautiful one for me, for both of us. Like many new spouses, I placed burden on myself to be an amazing wife in every regard, with at first a very distorted view of what this meant. Alert: It does not mean redefining yourself to fit a preconceived notion of your role in the partnership. It does mean embracing your wonderful self and honoring and celebrating your love every day…yes, even when you are cranky.

We are so happy-despite my health issues and other personal matters. Over the course of this wild year, our relationship redefined itself; I suppose you could say it matured. We communicate our thoughts, beliefs, and goals regularly, respectfully, and with love. We focus on one another but also respect each other’s craving for independence at times. We really love each other.

For our one-year anniversary we will be in Portugal! I cleverly aligned our annual-ish vacation with our anniversary, so there we will be. We are so excited. My hours and hours of scouring airfare deal sites to no avail has paid off: I scored our tickets for a mere $375 per person-what a rush that was! Now, to plan the rest- a rough itinerary, places to stay, and transportation. Any suggestions? Oh, how I love this stuff!

    1. Hi, Rita. Thanks for your comment! We are definitely visiting Lisbon and hopefully another area too. I would love any suggestions you have for places to see inside and out of Lisbon. Unfortunately we only have a week, but we intend to savor it. -Lisa

  1. Hi Lisa,

You will love Portugal! I was able to visit a good friend about a year ago there and could not have had a better time. Lisbon itself is small enough and condensed enough that once you get in the city, you can just walk around and explore!

One of my favorite areas was Principe Real: unique shops, coffee kiosks in parks, and beautiful views of the city.

Pois cafe in Alfama is also delicious and a healthy stop for lunch.

And if you want to go to a beach town, I recommend Rua da Praia da Adraga, Sintra, Portugal. You can take a cheap train from Lisbon that’s only thirty minutes away from Sintra. My best friend and I stayed here and loved it : https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/3014443?checkin=04%2F12%2F2016&checkout=04%2F15%2F2016&s=xC2x4EFR#host-profile

Hope this is helpful in any way!

    All the best,

    1. @Jordan Thank you so much for your note. We are so excited! I jotted down the name of the restaurant in Alfama (where we are staying). We are going to be staying in a small town near to Praia da Adraga for half of our trip! It looks so amazing. If you have any other suggestions, please send ’em my way 🙂
